Breastfeeding Prep for Success

If you are expecting, you already know that bringing a baby into the world takes a considerable amount of preparation. From daycare to newborn clothes to diapers and everything in between, you spend a lot of time anticipating your little one's arrival. Preparing to feed your baby is no exception! No matter how you feed your baby, being prepared is the key to success. Read on for tips on how to ensure you are ready, particularly if you plan to breastfeed/bodyfeed.

Empower Your Mind: Educate Yourself for Success

Breastfeeding is "natural" but it is NOT intuitive. The biggest mistake I see people make is having a desire to breastfeed, but forgetting to educate themselves before baby arrives. The last thing you want to do while sleep-deprived & wearing a diaper (but really- Depends diapers are WAY better than hospital pads) is to learn something brand new. Educate yourself as much as possible beforehand- take an online course, read a book, take a course through your local hospital, or book a parent coaching session with yours truly. There are obviously aspects that you will just have to learn on the fly, but having a good knowledge base will do wonders and help you avoid so many hiccups.

Build a Support Network

A support system is crucial. This can include a partner, friends who have or are currently breastfeeding, or a local support group. Many hospitals host free breastfeeding support groups- it's a great way to get out of the house and meet others who are in the same season of life. Another part of your support network should be a feeding specialist/lactation counselor. While you may not end up needing someone, having that connection in place prior to giving birth makes it a little easier to get help if you do end up needing it.

Stock up on the Essentials

Even if you plan to directly nurse, you should still have a breast pump and some bottles on hand. Many insurances provide some sort of coverage for a pump- talk to yours for specific details. Some other essentials include: nursing bras/tanks, breast pads (unless you want to leak through your shirts in the first few weeks), and a pillow for positioning . There are so many other products (stay tuned for a post exclusively on breastfeeding supplies/products), but those are the bare essentials.

Understand Common Challenges & Remain Persistent

Breastfeeding can come with its challenges, such as sore nipples, engorgement, or difficulty with latching. Knowing these challenges in advance can help you prepare mentally and emotionally. Familiarize yourself with potential solutions and remember that seeking help from a lactation counselor early on can often resolve many issues. Above all, approach breastfeeding with a positive mindset and be flexible. Every breastfeeding journey is unique-stay patient with yourself and your baby as you both learn and adjust to breastfeeding.

Preparing for breastfeeding while pregnant is a wonderful way to set yourself up for success and bond with your baby from the very beginning. By educating yourself & building a support system, you’re laying the groundwork for a fulfilling breastfeeding experience.
